"Mandy Hague I am a tutor teaching level 4 students at a regional technological institute. I’m in a reasonably small town and the class I am tutoring at the moment are mostly young maori men who have gang affiliations or are gang members themselves. We have had wonderful discussions about Jonos exhibition and as a result my students are planning to model themselves for their own exhibition with the intention of showing a different side to them. They felt they wanted to challenge peoples preconceived ideas so we are discussing how to portray the positive attributes they have to contribute to their families and communities. The exhibition has sparked a lively dialogue covering topics ranging from “is photography art?” to “ what we truly know about people based on their appearance?”. It has been a great way to get my students talking and thinking about art."

"I stopped in to look at the mob photo exhibition here in Tāmaki Makaurau making lots of noise at the moment, jokingly to see if I could recognise any whanaunga (family, cousins, relatives) amongst them. The photography is very well done. The subject matter and subjects evoke a strong emotive response. There were lots of quawkers trying to understand the art. Surprisingly the "wairua" (spirit) I felt was very strong. Not what i expected. I sensed that the works will have a stronger impact on the subjects and their organisation and how they view themselves than on the witnesses.
As I stood looking at them, I saw the colour, the leather, the swastika, the tats dissappear. I saw Māori. I saw bros. I saw matua (elders). I saw uncles and koroua (elder men). As I looked longer I began to see the older image of colonialisation and imperialism. I saw an image of a militia, red in colour also, with shiny badges, leather and a ferocious, warrior appearance also.
I left wondering if it was because of the darker period of our colonial legacy, the native wars, the treaty injustices, the brutal imprisionments and worse the executions and land confiscations our country's "original hara" (sin) that gave birth to these 12 foot images I stood looking at, and seeing my face looking back.
